Camp Management

Camp Juliette Low has a team of passionate and dedicated leadership that together have over 150 years of camp experience, all working together to create a fun and safe environment for campers year after year.

Nancy Brim – Director

Nancy first came to CJL as a camper in 1979 and was a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) in 1980 and 1981. She has since served the camp in many capacities – as a counselor, song leader, ropes course director, and CIT director. Nancy has been the camp director since 1994 and is always excited to spend her summers with resilient, confident women who are helping to grow great girls at CJL.

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Nancy has a BS degree in Biology from the University of the South and an MA in Secondary Education from San Jose State University. When she is not at camp, Nancy lives in Athens, Georgia, with her husband, Peter Carnell, and cats Jack-Jack and Black Betty, both black cats (Black Betty was born at CJL!).  Nancy taught high school chemistry and other sciences before she retired from full-time teaching in 2019.   She now teaches science part-time at Foothills Regional High School - Jackson.  Nancy enjoys cooking, gardening, and long distance training for breast cancer awareness walks.  She and Peter volunteer much of their time in the off-season to CJL, serving on the Camp Committee, regularly attending work weekends, and participating in special projects such as CJL's kitchen floor installation in 2000, pictured here.

Elizabeth Klespies - Director

Elizabeth began attending Camp Juliette Low in 2000 as a camper. After graduating the CIT program in 2009, she joined staff as a unit counselor and has since served as a unit leader, ropes course director, program director, and recruiting/marketing coordinator. 2023 was her first summer as camp director. She absolutely loves camp and being able to bring the CJL magic to campers year after year.

Following her graduation from Furman University with a BA in Business and Sociology, Elizabeth went to work onboard a Disney Cruise Ship as a youth and family entertainer. She now lives in Atlanta with her husband, Tim, and puppy, Christopher (found at camp during the 2019 summer), and owns her own wedding and event planning company, EKS Weddings and Events. In her free time, she enjoys playing tennis, traveling, spending time with family and brainstorming future camp programs and parties.

Kayla Benson - Assistant Director

Kayla’s camp journey started at 7 years old in 2002 when she walked straight up to her mom and told her “I want to go to an overnight camp and sleep under the stars”. Her mother then went on the internet and stumbled upon Camp Juliette Low and signed her up for Parent-Daughter and the rest is history.  Kayla’s always had a love for CJL and was constantly begging to stay for more and more sessions, adding a week or two every summer. She graduated the CIT program in 2012 and was able to finally join staff the summer after she finished High School. Kayla’s worked as a Unit Counselor, Unit Leader, and CIT Director. Summer 2025 will be her first summer as Assistant Director and she is so excited to bring her camp spirit and love of CJL into the role.

Kayla attended Kent State University (Go Flashes!) and graduated with a BS in Fashion Merchandising. After working at camp all summer, following graduation, she promptly moved all the way out to sunny Los Angeles! Even while being across the country, she still found time to come and work most summers, even being an online CIT Director during the summer of 2020. Kayla has recently moved back to the Atlanta area which has allowed her to go to smaller CJL events like work weekends, parent-daughter and program meetings. In her free time, Kayla enjoys spending time with friends, trying new restaurants, cooking and baking, and being an avid AMC A-list member – her go-to movie snacks are a large popcorn with all the butter, a pack of cookie dough bites, and a cherry and coke layered Icee.

Isabella (Izzy) Vakkur - Assistant Director

Izzy first attended Camp Juliette Low in 2007, and it quickly became one of her favorite places in the world. Even when her family moved overseas to Switzerland, Izzy continued to attend camp just about every summer. She completed the CIT program in 2015 and has since served in a variety of roles, including unit leader and CIT director.

After graduating from Bowdoin College with a degree in Neuroscience and Education, Izzy spent two years teaching 4th grade in Houston, Texas. She then returned to Maine, where she worked with teens in the juvenile justice system. Izzy is currently applying to clinical psychology doctoral programs to further her career in mental health.

Outside of camp, Izzy loves to spend her free time outdoors hiking, camping and cross-country skiing. She also enjoys reading, teaching yoga, traveling, competing in curling tournaments, and fostering dogs — 42 dogs and counting!

Karen Mitchell - Business Manager

Karen first came to CJL in 1982 as a unit counselor. She has volunteered her time as a member of the Camp Committee and the Board of Trustees since 1996. This service has included two terms as the chairman of the Board of Trustees. She is available year round to answer any questions you may have about Camp Juliette Low (info@cjl.org).

A native of Athens, Georgia, Karen now lives in Smyrna, Georgia, with her husband, Mark, and their two standard poodles. They have two grown children and two wonderful grandchildren. Her daughter was a camper, CIT, and counselor at CJL. Together, they enjoy volunteering in the kitchen during Work Weekends and Parent-Daughter Weekends.

Karen holds an Associates of Arts degree from Oxford College of Emory University and a Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education from Mercer. She spent many years teaching 2nd grade and middle school science. When not working with camp, Karen spends much of her time volunteering at her church and maintaining a rather large organic garden.
