Camp Management

Camp Juliette Low has a team of passionate and dedicated leadership that together have over 150 years of camp experience, all working together to create a fun and safe environment for campers year after year.

Nancy Brim – Director

Nancy first came to CJL as a camper in 1979 and was a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) in 1980 and 1981. She has since served the camp in many capacities – as a counselor, song leader, ropes course director, and CIT director. Nancy has been the camp director since 1994.

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Nancy has a BS degree in Biology from the University of the South and an MA in Secondary Education from San Jose State University. When she is not at camp, Nancy lives in Athens, Georgia, with her husband, Peter Carnell, and cats Jack-Jack and Black Betty, both black cats (Black Betty was born at CJL!). Nancy teaches chemistry and Earth systems at East Jackson Comprehensive High School in Jackson County and is a National Board Certified Teacher. Besides camping, Nancy enjoys playing soccer, cooking, and gardening. She and Peter volunteer much of their time in the off-season to CJL, serving on the Camp Committee, regularly attending work weekends, and participating in special projects such as CJL's kitchen floor installation in 2000, pictured here.

Elizabeth Klespies - Director

Elizabeth began attending Camp Juliette Low in 2000 as a camper. After graduating the CIT program in 2009, she joined staff as a unit counselor and has since served as a unit leader, ropes course director, program director, and recruiting/marketing coordinator. 2023 was her first summer as camp director. She absolutely loves camp and being able to bring the CJL magic to campers year after year.

Following her graduation from Furman University with a BA in Business and Sociology, Elizabeth went to work onboard a Disney Cruise Ship as a youth and family entertainer. She now lives in Atlanta with her husband, Tim, and puppy, Christopher (found at camp during the 2019 summer), and owns her own wedding and event planning company, EKS Weddings and Events. In her free time, she enjoys playing tennis, traveling, spending time with family and brainstorming future camp programs and parties.

Allison Harrison - Assistant Director

Allison was introduced to CJL at a very young age, accompanying her parents at work weekends and reunions until she was able to come to Camp on her own in 1992. She graduated the CIT program and promptly joined staff as a unit counselor in 2002. In the years since, Allison has served CJL in the summers as a unit counselor, unit leader, ropes course director, program director, CIT director, and assistant director. She was CJL's first Recruiter from 2008 - 2011. Additionally, Allison sits on the Camp Committee and chairs CJL's Parent-Daughter and Scholarship Committees.

Allison has a BS in Psychology from Sewanee: The University of the South in Tennessee and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Columbus State University. Since 2011, due to her husband's military service, Allison has lived in Alaska, Virginia (twice!), Colorado, Indiana, Kansas, and Germany. Allison currently resides in Kansas (again) with her husband Austin, two children (one hopefully a future camper!), and two cats. She works as a grant writer and grants manager for the United Methodist Youth Home in Evansville, Indiana. Outside of her job, parenting, and CJL duties, Allison enjoys reading, hiking, board games, keeping up with her CJL friends, and spending time with kitties awaiting their forever homes at the Fort Leavenworth shelter.

Sara Beth Hitt - Assistant Director

Sara Beth began attending CJL as a camper in the early 80’s and has been affiliated with CJL in some capacity ever since. She has served as a unit leader, lake director, ropes course director, barn director, CIT director and assistant director. Sara Beth also served as co-director with Nancy until the birth of her daughter.

After graduating from East Tennessee State University with a BA in English, she worked in the outdoor industry for several years as a climbing instructor and recreational counselor. It was during that time she discovered a passion for working with kids with emotional and behavioral challenges. She completed her Masters in Special Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and, after several years as a special education teacher in North Carolina, returned to receive her PhD in Special Education. Sara Beth is currently an assistant professor at ETSU where she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in instructional strategies and classroom and behavior management. She currently lives in Bristol Virginia with her husband Kris, daughter Mayne, and their motley crew of pets. She enjoys camping, traveling, and volunteer work with her local community organizations. However, her greatest joy is the opportunity to now return to camp each summer with her daughter.

Rachel Mast - Assistant Director

CJL has been a part of Rachel's life since 2001. She has previously served as camp’s pool and program director, as well as a camp counselor. In 2019, she stepped up as assistant director and has been leading the campers with her bright smile ever since.

After graduating from Georgia Southern University with a masters in special education, Rachel is now a 6th grade special education teacher and lacrosse coach in Dalton, Georgia. She loves cats, archery, woodchopping, and the mountains. She and her husband Will love to spend their leisure time hiking, traveling, and enjoying local cuisines.

Karen Mitchell - Business Manager

Karen first came to CJL in 1982 as a unit counselor. She has volunteered her time as a member of the Camp Committee and the Board of Trustees since 1996. This service has included two terms as the chairman of the Board of Trustees. She is available year round to answer any questions you may have about Camp Juliette Low (info@cjl.org).

A native of Athens, Georgia, Karen now lives in Smyrna, Georgia, with her husband, Mark, and their two standard poodles. They have two grown children and two wonderful grandchildren. Her daughter was a camper, CIT, and counselor at CJL. Together, they enjoy volunteering in the kitchen during Work Weekends and Parent-Daughter Weekends.

Karen holds an Associates of Arts degree from Oxford College of Emory University and a Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education from Mercer. She spent many years teaching 2nd grade and middle school science. When not working with camp, Karen spends much of her time volunteering at her church and maintaining a rather large organic garden.
